Northeastern University International Village
Boston, Massachusetts

The project consists of 475,000 sq/ft of mixed-use space including residential, retail, office, and dining space located in three high-rise towers of 10, 21, and 22 stories, and a connected five story office building. The dining facility services approximately 4000 students per day. The residential component provides a total of 1200 beds.

The HVAC design for the facility consisted of a centralized 1200 ton chiller plant with high efficiency water cooled chillers. High efficiency modular boilers totaling 28,000,000 BTU’s were also provided. In addition all AHU were provided with the integral ERV’s. The electric service for the project was a duel-feed 13.8kV, 3-phase, 3-wire service from the local utility company. Three fused 15kV switches served the following unit substations “USS1”, “USS2”, and “USS3”.  “USS3” substation services non-dormitory areas of the building and consisted of a 13.8kV-480/277V, 2000/2666kVA, 3200 amp rated.  “USS1” and “USS2” substations services a bus duct riser #1 and #2 respectfully, and serves the dormitory areas of the building and consisted of a 13.8kV-208/120V, 1000/1333kVA, 3600 amp rated unit substation. The plumbing engineering design consisted of heat exchangers so as to eliminate the need for domestic hot water storage tanks thus increasing system capacity. The construction cost of the building was approximately $175 million.

The building opened in August 2009 and is expected to be LEED gold certified.
