New Massachusetts State Fire Code (527 CMR)

Tuesday, November 11, 2014

On January 1st, a new edition of the Massachusetts State Fire Code (527 CMR) will take effect.  As the Fire Code governs existing buildings, there will be no concurrency period.
The new edition is based on the 2012 Edition of NFPA 1: Fire Code, with Massachusetts amendments.

More information, including the draft amendments, can be found here:

There are significant differences between the current edition of 527 CMR and NFPA 1.  In general, NFPA 1 primarily covers topics related to the use and maintenance of buildings rather than their design and construction.  However, many of the Massachusetts amendments add requirements to NFPA 1 that are equivalent to requirements in the State Building Code (780 CMR).
