BBRS Promulgates the 2012 International Energy Efficiency Code (IECC)

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

In their July 2013 meeting the Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) voted to promulgate the 2012 IECC with Massachusetts Amendments.  The new edition of the code will become mandatory July 1st, 2014 for non-Stretch Code communities.  Prior to July 1st, buildings are permitted to comply with either the 2009 IECC or the 2012 IECC.  The BBRS is presently working with the Department of Energy Resources to establish whether or not a new Stretch Code is necessary, and if so, what extra measures will be required for it.  The outcome of these talks will affect those communities who are presently under the Stretch Code which is based on the 2009 IECC.  The 2012 IECC provisions for commercial energy conservation are similar to those of the current MA Stretch Energy Code.
