Seminar II: Building Code Essentials Part 2 1 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
This session highlights key provisions contained within the following sections of the Massachusetts State Building Code:
  • Chapter 6, Types of Construction\
  • Chapter 7, Fireresistant Materials and Construction
  • Chapter 9, Fire Protection Systems, and
  • Chapter 10, Means of Egress

Seminar III: Building Code Essentials Parts 1 and 2 2 hours, 2 AIA Learning Units

Seminar IV:    Chapter 34: Existing Buildings and the Massachusetts State Building Code 1.5 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
This session demonstrates the application of the existing buildings chapter ("Repair, Alteration, Addition and Change of Use of Existing Structures") to several hypothetical scenarios within an existing building.  Topics to be covered include:
  • Requirements for the continuation of the same use group
  • Changes in Hazard Index
  • Compliance Alternatives
  • Energy provisions for existing buildings
  • Seismic and other structural requirements, and
  • Historic buildings

Seminar V: Accessibility Requirements 1.5 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
This session serves as an introduction to the requirements of the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board and the Americans with Disability Act. Scoping, existing buildings, site requirements as well typical interior accessibility requirements will be covered.

Seminar VI: New Energy Requirements 1.5 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
As of July 1, 2001 all new building permit applications must demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the new energy code (780 CMR 13, revised). This seminar will provide an overview of the revised code with specific examples.

Seminar VII: Fire Protection Systems 1.5 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
This session serves as an introduction to different fire protection systems.  It will focus primarily on sprinkler systems and the key provisions associated with design including spacing, fire pumps, stand pipes etc.  This session will also touch upon other important fire protection systems including fire alarms and smoke control.

Seminar VIII: Negotiating Zoning Approvals in the City of Boston 1.5 hour, 1 AIA Learning Unit
This session describes the process of securing zoning appeals within the City of Boston, including processes such as Article 80 Large Project Review, variance requests at the Zoning Board of Appeals, and Zoning plan review at the City's Inspectional Services Department
